OmniOutliner is commercial outlining software for macOS and iOS produced by The Omni Group. OmniOutliner has most of the features of a conventional outliner, allowing the user to create nested lists of topics for almost any purpose, but has additional features extending its functionality beyond simple outlining. Recent versions of the software are universal binaries. OmniOutliner received a special mention in the 2005 Apple Design Awards, and Macworld gave the 'Professional' version its highest rating.[3]

OmniOutliner 4 for Mac was released on January 15, 2014, with a modern redesign with new sidebars and a dynamic inspector, text zooming, smart match, date pasting logic, and more.[4]
OmniOutliner 4.5 for Mac was released on March 2, 2016, a major update with more control printing selected rows, filtering indentation, export with tab separated indentation, and more.
OmniOutliner 5 for Mac was released on April 5, 2017.
OmniOutliner 3 for iOS was released in 2018.[5]
Feature set[edit]
Outlining[edit]
OmniOutliner provides the basic functions of an outliner, structuring content in a hierarchy of rows indented under one another to show the relationships between different items. The user can expand or collapse outline levels for easy viewing, sort topics, promote or demote the level of a topic, or 'hoist' one level so only that topic is shown. It supports considerable control over styles, allowing the user to make global changes to the appearance of the outline at particular level. It also permits the user to add notes to any row, which can be displayed in-line, (i.e. within the structure of the outline) or in a separate pane below the outline. OmniOutliner documents can incorporate multimedia elements, including images, audio, and video, as well as PDF documents and web links.
In addition, OmniOutliner allows the addition of columns to the outline, so that the user can create rudimentary spreadsheets. There is limited support for summarizing columns, such as totaling or averaging, albeit not with anything close to the variety of functions provided in conventional spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel.
OmniOutliner does not support cloning, a feature of some outliners that allows one topic to appear at more than one place in the outline. The Omni Group may, however, add this feature sometime in the future.[6]
Extensibility[edit]
OmniOutliner supports scripting via AppleScript, and users have extended the software to export to iCal, Apple's calendaring software, and even the iPod.[7]
Import and export[edit]
OmniOutliner's document format is proprietary, but it can export to OPML, HTML, DOCX, and several text and rich text formats. It can import from several other document formats (ACTA, MORE, Keynote, and Concurrence), as well as text and rich text formats.

If you’ve decided to purchase OmniOutliner directly from us, download the direct version of OmniOutliner. There’s only one download for both Essentials and Pro users.
When you launch OmniOutliner for the first time, you can get started right away with a free trial, or immediately purchase or enter a license. Click the Buy Licenses button to open the OmniOutliner 5 page in our web store.
Purchasing OmniOutliner for new users

In the Buy a new license section, click the Buy button next to the desired license type to add the license to your cart.

After completing your transaction, you’ll receive a receipt via email, as well as an invoice containing your license information. Unlocking OmniOutliner for new users

Open OmniOutliner 5. On first launch, you’re asked whether you’d like to start a trial or purchase a license.
Click one of the Buy buttons to purchase Pro or Essentials using your Apple ID.
On any other Macs where you wish to set up OmniOutliner 5, repeat the download process with the same Apple ID. OmniOutliner should automatically restore your purchase when you download it, but if some reason it doesn’t, click the Restore button on any of the In-App purchase screens.

Make sure that the previous version of OmniOutliner that you purchased from the Mac App Store is installed.

Open OmniOutliner 5. On first launch, you’re asked whether you’d like to start a trial or purchase a license.
Since you’re upgrading to OmniOutliner 5 for Mac from an earlier version, click the Check for Discount text at the bottom of the window. You’ll be asked to locate the earlier version of OmniOutliner 5 that’s installed on your Mac. Click Verify Previous App to find it. Select the earlier version of OmniOutliner from where you installed it, then click Open.
- If OmniOutliner 5 is not verifying the earlier version, check that the earlier version app is a Mac App Store purchase.
After your earlier version of OmniOutliner has been verified, your discounted pricing options will be listed. Click one of the Upgrade buttons to purchase Pro or Essentials using your Apple ID.
On any other Macs where you wish to set up OmniOutliner 5, repeat the download process with the same Apple ID. OmniOutliner should automatically restore your purchase when you download it, but if some reason it doesn’t, click the Restore button on any of the In-App purchase screen.
Activating (or reactivating) features on another device
After the initial In-App Purchase is completed, that purchase is permanently associated with your Apple ID. As long as you are using the same Apple ID and are in the same country as the original purchase, Apple allows you to re-download any of your previous purchases for free.
If you’d like to activate Essentials or Pro on any of your other Macs, or if you’ve uninstalled and reinstalled OmniOutliner from the Mac App Store, head back to the In-App Purchases window and tap the Restore button.
Troubleshooting In-App Purchases
If you are unable to reinstall the previous version or complete your In-App Purchase, try logging out and logging back in to the App Store.
In the App Store app, choose Sign Out from the Store menu.
Reboot your Mac.
Sign back in with your Apple ID. If reinstalling a prior version, be sure to use the ID tied to your purchase of the previous version.
Try reinstalling or completing the In-App Purchase again.
